Spring River’s Yankee Captain “Jeter”

ALL HAIL JETER, King of The Labs, our 2018 Lab of The Year.  This year was the toughest yet and we can not thank all of your labs enough for being such incredible athletes and awesome companions – members of your family and the extended Lab Photo of The Day community.  We asked Mike Gibson owner and trainer of this magnificent dog to tell us what it’s like to be Jeter’s owner or as Mike refers to Jeter – his “Once in a Lifetime Dog…. “

“Way back in May 2009  I found my way to a rural home near Hawk Point, MO, to select a  chocolate male puppy.  I had the 2nd male pick and did my best to choose right – hoping that I would not select the wrong one…man, was I ever rewarded!  That playful little beauty turned out to be possibly the most-titled chocolate lab this country has ever had:

Jeter has not only earned his UKC Grand Hunting Retriever Champion and AKC Master National Hunter titles but also has a perfect 35-35 in Finished and Master hunt tests.  He has excelled in the Super Retriever Series by winning 6 different times in 6 different states including the Amateur Crown Champion in 2015.  He has also finished in the top three at the Crown Championship multiple times.  Adding to his versatility of competition feats he won a Qualifying Field Trial event when he was just 2 years old.

Sandwiched in between all his ribbon gathering you can find him in the marsh gathering greenheads every weekend of the season and a few times in between.  I think Derek Jeter (the legendary shortstop for the New York Yankees whom he was named after) would be quite honored by all of his accomplishments and the way he has carried himself throughout the process.

Jeter is 74 pounds of great looks, athleticism, style and an intense desire to retrieve. Without a doubt, I would say that God blessed us with a once in a lifetime puppy 9 ½ years ago!  Even though I know this incredible journey is getting closer to the end…for now, he’s still going at full throttle.  Whether we’re retrieving ribbons, greenheads, Ryker (my 3-year-old grandson) or laying in front of the fireplace, we’re going to enjoy every moment together.”

CONGRATS MIKE and JETER!   We look forward to seeing and hearing much more throughout the year from this incredible team!
